The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Early Presidential and Legislative Elections and Popular Consultations: Yasuní and Chocó Andino in Ecuador, headed former Vice President and Foreign Minister of Panama Isabel de Saint Malo, began its deployment in the country on August 10th for the elections on Sunday August 20th.

The OAS Mission made up of 80 experts and observers from 20 countries analyzed key aspects of the process such as electoral organization and telematic voting, electoral technology, electoral justice, political financing, political participation of women, indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendants, and political-electoral violence.

During its work in the country, the Mission met government representatives, electoral authorities, political leaders and candidates, scholars, representatives of civil society, and members of the international community to learn about the electoral process in the country. On election day Mission observed the elections and the popular consultation in 20 of Ecuador’s provinces and the metropolitan district of Quito.

This was twenty fifth (25) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in Ecuador, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Panama, and Peru.
