The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the General Elections in Paraguay, headed by former United States Ambassador to the OAS Luis Lauredo, began its deployment in the country on April 19th for the elections on Sunday, April 30th.
The OAS Mission made up of 60 experts and observers from 18 countries analyzed key aspects of the process such as electoral organization, technology and justice, voting abroad, the political participation of women, political financing, campaigns and freedom of expression, as well as political participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.
During its work in the country, the Mission met electoral and government authorities, political leaders and representatives of civil society and the accredited international community to learn about the electoral process in the country. On election day Mission observed the elections in Paraguay’s 17 departments, in the capital district of Asuncion, and in Washington D.C., United States.
This was sixteenth (16) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in Paraguay, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, and Peru.
