REMJA´s Cybercrime Training Workshop for Judges

From May 14 to 16, in Chile, judges from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay participated in a training workshop on topics related to cybercrime. In particular, the admissibility of electronic evidence in courts, the parameters of an effective chain of custody, an introduction to evidentiary and procedural aspects concerning a cybercrime, as well as tools for international cooperation.

The training was organized by the General Secretariat of the OAS, through the Department of Legal Cooperation of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs, as the Technical Secretariat of the REMJA (Meetings of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Americas), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) and the Judiciary of Chile.

In the workshop, specialists from the U.S. Department of Justice and the OAS trained judges on:

  • Methods used by criminals to attack computers
  • Basic concepts about the Internet
  • Available international cooperation tools
  • Evidence held by service providers
  • Exploitation of mobile phones
  • Virtual currencies
  • Analysis of digital evidence
  • Attribution techniques

Additionally, the judges will have the opportunity to apply the learned concepts through a case study and a practical exercise.
