The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Municipal Elections in the Dominican Republic, headed by the former Foreign Minister of Paraguay Eladio Loizaga, began its deployment in the country on February 8th for the elections on Sunday, February 18th.
The OAS Mission made up of 16 experts and observers from 6 countries analyzed issues related electoral organization; electoral technology; electoral justice; political-electoral financing and political participation of women.
During its work in the country, the Mission met with government representatives, electoral authorities, leaders and candidates and representatives of civil society and academia, as well as members of the international community to learn about the ongoing electoral process. On election day, the Mission was deployed in the National District and in the province of Santo Domingo to observe the preparations and the conduct of Election Day activities in municipalities and municipal districts.
This was the twenty-first (21) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission to the Dominican Republic, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, Brazil, France, Panama and the United States.
