OAS Electoral Observation Mission: 2023 Municipal Elections in Colombia

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Municipal Elections in Colombia, headed by attorney Soledad García Muñoz, began its deployment in the country on January 19th for the elections on Sunday January 29th.

The OAS Mission made up of 25 experts and observers from 14 countries analyzed key aspects of the process such as electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, political-electoral financing, accessibility for people with disabilities, participation of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant communities and rural populations, political participation of women and electoral violence, among others.

During its work in the country, the Mission met with electoral and governmental authorities, political leaders, and representatives of civil society. On election day Mission was deployed in the capital district of Bogotá and in 10 departments of the country: Atlántico, Antioquia, Cauca, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Santander, and Valle del Cauca, to observe the preparations for and conduct of the election.

This was twenty third (23) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in Colombia, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, France, Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Panama, Switzerland and the United States.
