OAS Electoral Observation Mission: 2023 Sectional Elections in Ecuador

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Sectional Elections, Election of Councilors of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS), Referendum 2023 and Popular Consultation for the Creation of the Sevilla Don Bosco Canton in Ecuador, headed by Uruguayan sociologist Juan Pablo Corlazzoli, began its deployment in the country on January 27th for the elections on Sunday, February 5th.

The OAS Mission made up of 20 experts and observers from 9 countries analyzed key aspects of the process such as organization, technology, electoral justice, and direct democracy, among others.

During its work in the country, the Mission met government representatives, electoral authorities, political leaders and candidates, academics and representatives of civil society to learn about the electoral process in the country. On election day Mission observed the elections in seven of Ecuador’s 24 provinces.

This was twenty third (23) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in Ecuador, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, South Korea, the United States, the Netherlands, and Peru.
