The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the General Elections in Guatemala, headed by former Foreign Minister of Paraguay Eladio Loizaga, began its deployment in the country on June 14th for the elections on Sunday, June 25th.

The OAS Mission made up of 90 experts and observers from 20 countries analyzed key aspects of the process such as electoral organization, technology and justice, electoral violence, political financing, the political participation of women, and the political participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

During its work in the country, the Mission met electoral and government authorities, political leaders, and representatives of civil society and the international community to learn about the electoral process in the country. On election day Mission observed the elections in in the 24 Departmental Electoral Boards (Juntas Electorales Departamentales - JED), corresponding to Guatemala’s 22 departments, the Guatemala City Central District, and one polling station set up in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States of America.

This was twenty-first (21) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in Guatemala, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, Spain, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, Peru, and Switzerland.
