The Department for Sustainable Democracy and Special Missions is dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions across the region through the coordination and implementation of multiple initiatives, including special missions, technical cooperation programs, and capacity-building efforts. Its mission is to enhance democratic institutionality in alignment with the principles outlined in the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

Since its establishment, the Department has consistently offered effective and efficient assistance to OAS member countries in their pursuits to promote democracy, peace, the rule of law, and dialogue. Through its comprehensive approach and technical expertise, the Department aims to bolster the stability and consolidation of democratic systems across the region. By addressing specific challenges, it endeavors to cultivate an environment conducive to the advancement of democratic values and principles.

Currently, the DSMDE has 4 missions/programs, which are: the OAS Mission to the Belize-Guatemala Process (AZ/OAS): the Mission to Support the Peace Process (MAPP/OAS), the International Electoral Accreditation Body (IEAB/OAS), and the Inter-American Judicial Facilitators Program (PIFJ/OAS).
