IACHR Announces Selection of Academic Centers and Universities for the Second Academic Network

Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has finalized the selection process for the second call for applications from academic establishments and universities to take part in the Specialized Academic Network for Technical Cooperation.

The IACHR has selected 12 initiatives from the 27 that were submitted, based on the criteria established in the terms and conditions of the call for proposals. It wishes to thank all the academic establishments and universities that submitted proposals and congratulates those that were selected to take part:

1. Inter-American Academy of Human Rights at the Autonomous University of Coahuila, Mexico
2. Research Group on International Law, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
3. Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Santo Domingo Campus, Dominican Republic
4. School of Law, Autonomous National University of Mexico
5. Guayaquil Public Policy Observatory and Permanent Human Rights Committee of Guayaquil, University of Guayaquil, Ecuador
6. Network of African Diaspora Studies in Uruguay, University of the Republic, Uruguay
7. Champagnat University, Mendoza, Argentina
8. Center for Human Rights at Andrés Bello Catholic University, Venezuela
9. Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC), University of Ottawa, Canada

These establishments will develop academic projects to generate inputs that will constitute technical support for the work of the offices of the thematic rapporteurs monitoring, promoting, and protecting human rights, and/or activities seeking to measure levels of compliance with the recommendations and decisions of the IACHR or the impact or effectiveness of these. They will also contribute to the Impact Observatory and produce inputs that can be used to map success stories, good practices, and lessons learned during the implementation of recommendations by Member States, which will feed into the SIMORE database.

This second round of the Academic Network is part of Program 12 of Strategic Objective 3 of the IACHR's Strategic Plan 2019–2021, which promotes the creation of a Specialized Academic Network to form part of the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights. Through the network, the IACHR will carry out studies, research, and other joint activities, expand knowledge, and generate information to contribute to the promotion and defense of human rights in the Americas.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
