Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has launched a multimedia site for the Rapid and Integrated Response Coordination Unit for the COVID-19 pandemic crisis (SACROI COVID-19). The site contains information compiled by the IACHR on measures that have been adopted in the Americas to combat the pandemic, as well as the main standards and recommendations of the Inter-American Human Rights System, including IACHR Resolution No. 1/20 on Pandemics and Human Rights in the Americas.

The SACROI COVID-19 multimedia site is an accessible, easy-to-use online query tool that contains: evidence of the impact of the pandemic on human rights; monitoring of how states in the region are responding to the pandemic; documents and instruments drafted by the IACHR based on inter-American human rights standards; status reports on the pandemic; and other information on the work of the SACROI COVID-19. The IACHR hopes that the site will facilitate access to information about the monitoring it is carrying out and the human rights situation during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also hopes the articulated use of IACHR mechanisms and functions will impact preventive measures and circumstances that may give rise to human rights violations.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
