Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announced that it will be holding meetings with civil society and other working meetings as part of the 176th Period of Sessions, which will take place online between November 6 and 10, 2020.
During the 176th Period of Sessions, meetings will be held with civil society to gather information on the human rights situation in the countries of the Americas. These meetings will take place online in real time between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM (EST) on Friday, July 10, 2020. Organizations that are interested in taking part can sign up through June 28, 2020, at 11:59 PM (EST) using this form.
The IACHR also invites members of the Organization of American States to take part in meetings that will deepen the regional dialogue scheduled for July 9, 2020. These working meetings will be held on July 8 and 9, 2020. Working meetings are not open to the public and are instead only attended by the parties to the case, friendly settlement, or precautionary measure and the IACHR itself. The schedule for the working meetings is available here.
The IACHR’s online meetings will be held via a secure, easy-to-access platform that will be announced in due course. The IACHR will also notify parties of sign-in procedures and security guidelines for the 176th Period of Sessions.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
