The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Mauricio Montalvo, today signed the agreement on privileges and immunities for the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission for the elections of February 5, 2023, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.
Ambassador Montalvo stressed that both the government and the Ecuadorian people value having "a transparent, objective and impartial electoral system that is subject to the scrutiny of international observation." "The presence of the OAS Electoral Mission is highly valued in the country; from the government we are always ready to collaborate with the Inter-American system," added the Ecuadorian diplomat.
For his part, Secretary General Almagro highlighted that this will be the 23rd Mission that the OAS has sent to Ecuador, the member state that has received the most missions. "The outstanding number of missions is not only a reflection of the great openness and commitment of the country to strengthen democratic processes, especially its institutions and electoral processes, but also of the Organization's commitment to Ecuador," added the OAS Secretary General.
The elections on Sunday, February 5, include the 2023 Sectional Elections , the election of councilors, the 2023 Referendum and a Popular Consultation over the creation of the Canton Sevilla Don Bosco. The Mission will include 20 people of 9 nationalities.
