OAS CHIEF CALLS FOR GREATER FOCUS ON DEVELOPMENT

  December 3, 2007

Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, calling for a committee on development, under the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Permanent Council, said it could help simplify the structure and put more focus on the topic of development in member states, on a more consistent basis.

Insulza made the remarks as he address member state ambassadors at the 138th Regular Meeting of the Permanent Executive Committee of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development l (CEPCIDI), chaired by El Salvador’s Ambassador to the OAS, Abigail Castro de Pérez.

Offering “reflections on political dialogue and partnership within the Inter-American Council for Integral Development,” the OAS Secretary general noted that the proposed committee would also be invested with powers to strengthen technical assistance the organization provides its member states.

During the meeting, the Director of Research and Planning in the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Labor and Development of Small and Medium Size Business, Shanmatee Singh, presented the member state representatives with the Report of the Fifteenth Meeting of Ministers of Labor. That meeting had been held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, last September.

The delegates also approved two candidacies—presented by Jamaica and Barbados, respectively—to fill vacancies on the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD). The also considered, among other items, a proposal from the Executive Secretariat for Integral development (SEDI) on strategies to mobilize and raise funds, presented by the Executive Secretary for Integral Development, Alfonso Quiñónez.
