Washington, D.C. – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will hold an Extraordinary Period of Sessions in Chile from June 6 to 10, 2016. The IACHR thanks the State of Chile its offer to host this 158 Period of Sessions, as well as the support for its organization.

The Commission has decided to hold nine public hearings, which will take place on June 7, 8 and 9*. The IACHR calls on interested users to present their requests for hearings through the available system on the IACHR Website, between April 22 and 28. The requests must be for thematic hearings on South America, either about the region or a country, except Chile; as well as hearings on cases on the merits stage.  No working meetings on petitions, cases or precautionary measures will be held on this 158 Period of Sessions.

A principal, autonomous body of the OAS, the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
